This is an old classic cocktail, from the Prohibition era. It was texted to me by a mixologist friend who tried it in a bar. And it features green Chartreuse, so I was immediately interested.
This is a very powerful, heady combination of ingredients. Something which when I first considered it, I thought would never work. Too many big, bold flavours that would all be competing for dominance. And yet somehow they balance themselves out well.
You’ve still got a lot going on in the glass, and you would certainly describe it as full-on flavour, but it is great. And it is yet another use for that bottle of green Chartreuse that you struggle to find a use for as a mixologist. Perhaps.
- 25 ml gin
- 25 ml green Chartreuse
- 25 ml Maraschino liqueur
- 25 ml lime juice
Shake it all with ice and serve. I’ve tended to serve it in a coupette to make it look different, and I’ve also tried shaking it with egg white, to give it a silkier mouth-feel. Not sure it necessarily improves the cocktail and the lime juice makes it separate a little but it’s worth a try.
This is one of my top 10 cocktails. I can’t recommend it any more highly than that.
